Behind the Music- Learning to Listen with Your Whole Self
Welcome.
If you’ve found your way here, chances are music has already touched your life in a way that words alone could not.
Perhaps a song carried you through grief.
Perhaps a melody reminded you of someone you love.
Perhaps you’ve felt your mood shift with a rhythm, found yourself dancing without thinking, or experienced the strange comfort of hearing exactly the right lyric at exactly the right time.
Most of us have had these experiences.
Few of us have ever been invited to understand them.
Behind the Music was created from a simple question:
Why does music move us so deeply?
Over the years, I found myself exploring that question from many different directions. As a licensed therapist, I studied trauma, nervous system regulation, mindfulness, embodiment, and the ways our brains and bodies respond to experience. At the same time, I kept returning to music—not simply because I loved it, but because I witnessed its remarkable ability to help people reconnect with themselves in ways that conversation alone sometimes could not.
Again and again, I noticed something.
Music wasn’t simply accompanying transformation.
It was participating in it.
That realization eventually became the foundation of the Soul Song Integration Method™, a developmental approach that weaves together music, movement, reflection, nervous system awareness, and intentional integration.
This course is the educational companion to that work.
It is not designed to convince you that music is powerful.
You already know that.
Instead, it offers language for experiences you may have already had.
Together we’ll explore what neuroscience is discovering about music, memory, emotion, movement, and the nervous system. We’ll look at why rhythm can help us regulate, why certain songs become part of our identity, why movement changes the way we experience music, and why the intentional sequencing of songs can create a developmental journey rather than simply a playlist.
But there is something equally important I’d like to invite you to remember.
Not everything that matters can be measured.
Science helps us understand many remarkable aspects of how music affects the brain and body. It gives us language, evidence, and insight.
Yet there are still moments that remain beautifully mysterious.
The song that arrives when you need it most.
The memory that surfaces unexpectedly.
The tears that come before you understand why.
The feeling that somehow, a piece of music knows you.
In this course, science and mystery are not competing explanations.
They are companions.
One helps us understand.
The other invites us to wonder.
As we move through each Movement, I encourage you not to rush.
Listen to the music.
Notice your body.
Reflect honestly.
Allow yourself to be surprised.
At the end of each Movement, you’ll find four simple invitations:
Listen — Experience a carefully chosen song or sequence that brings the ideas to life.
Reflect — Explore thoughtful questions that connect the learning to your own experience.
Integrate — Carry one simple practice into your daily life before moving forward.
Continue the Journey — Discover ways to deepen the experience through the Soul Song Ceremonies, Integration Ceremonies, or the Soul Song Integration Method™.
This is not a course to complete as quickly as possible.
It is an invitation to listen more deeply.
Not only to the music…
but to yourself.
Thank you for being here.
I’m honored to walk this part of the journey with you.
